A little over a year ago, the Michigan Small Farm Council lost one of its founding members-Mike Beers- in a tragic car accident. To honor his passing, but more importantly, to honor his family and passion, his friend Brian Evans planned a disc golf themed fundraiser on Sunday January 1, 2017 at Stony Creek Metropark. The sun was shining and the temperature was perfect to get outside and enjoy the start to the New Year. Over 100 disc golfers and friends gathered to raise money while doing something that Mike enjoyed.

Many vendors helped support this event by donating various disc golf items and personal donations from friends were added to the raffle opportunities. I was amazed by the generosity of this group and humbled by their support. I was invited to come out and meet the folks participating and be the face of the Michigan Small Farm Council. I have to admit that I have never played disc golf and didn’t realize what a following it had. These are some serious disc golfers and you could tell they were there to have fun as well.

I miss Mike and his contribution to the MSFC. I always enjoyed sharing ideas with him and collaborating on our goals—protecting small scale farming in Michigan. Mike’s family was out as well and I got to say hello to them. Brian worked very hard to organize this event and was able to raise funds that will be split between Mike’s family and the MSFC to honor his wife’s wishes to support Mike’s legacy. We here at the MSFC are deeply humbled and grateful for this support.

Thank you –all who were a part of this day to honor Mike Beers!
