Council Membership
The Michigan Small Farm Council (MSFC) works to inform the public about small farm issues in Michigan, to ensure that all farmers that need legal advice or representation can find it, and to minimize the cost of insurance to small farmers in urban and rural areas alike. Each of these benefits is describe below, followed by a simple online membership form.
Member Benefits
Join the MSFC for comprehensive information and discussion on small farm issues in Michigan. The MSFC routinely attends meetings of the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development and other state-level agricultural policy meetings, and disseminates that information to MSFC Members on our Facebook page, in Newsletters, Blogs, and Action Alerts. Our Facebook page has also become a very active place to share and discuss small farm stories as they happen in Michigan.
Join the MSFC for legal assistance in fighting for small farm rights in Michigan. The MSFC is an affiliate of the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF), a national legal organization committed to protecting agricultural rights which has a policy of representing farmers that they agree to represent at low cost to the farmer when they become a member. Click here for more information on the FTCLDF membership levels and what they have to offer.
Join the MSFC for group rates on Farm, Home, and Auto Insurance. The MSFC has partnered with C&M Insurance and underwritten by Fremont Insurance, to provide discounts of 10-15% on Farm, Home and Auto Insurance anywhere in Michigan. For farmers in rural areas, this offers a much-needed insurance option. For farmers in residential or urban areas, this may be the only farm insurance option in Michigan. This is important since some homeowner's policies are declared void when farm activities such as backyard chickens are conducted on the property. In addition, this insurance option covers not only farm buildings such as chicken coops, but also farm-related liabilities not usually encountered by homeowners.
